Antibiotic Awareness Public Health Campaign Posted on 30 Mar 2022

The Team at Grafton Road Surgery are proud supporters of the

National "Keep Antibiotics Working" Campaign

We are all Antibiotic Guardians who have pledged to ensure that we promote patients having key information regarding the use of Antibiotics.

Taking Antibiotics when you don't need them puts you and your family at risk.

For example, Antibiotics are no longer routinely used to treat :

  • Chest Infections
  • Ear Infections in Children
  • Sore Throats

We ask that our patients take the pledge and sign up to becoming a Guardian by following the 3 Steps below, this will help keep these essential medicines from becoming resistant to bacteria :

  1.  Don't Demand Antiobiotics from your GP - Antibiotics are not needed everytime we are ill, they make very little difference to colds, flus and sore throats. Ask your Pharmacist about over the counter medicines that can help
  2. Take Antibiotics exactly as they are prescribed - Never save them for later or give them to someone else
  3. Spread the word - tell your family and friends about using Antibiotics properly

Antibiotic Resistance & "Superbugs"

The overuse of Antibiotics in recent years means they are becoming less effective and has led to the emergence of "Superbugs". These are strains of bacteria that have developed resistance to many different types of Antibiotics, including:

  • MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphlyococcus aureus)
  • Clostridium difficile (C.diff)
  • the bacteria that cause multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis

These types of infections can be serious and challenging to treat and are becoming an increasing cause of disability and death across the world.
