Mounjaro
Posted or Updated on 23 Jun 2025
From Monday 23rd June 2025 you may hear in the media that the weight loss injection Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) will be available on prescription from your GP.
Whilst this is true the criteria is very strict and is as follows:
· BMI of 40 of more (this will be checked at your appointment, if your BMI is not above 40 please do not book an appointment)
If your BMI is above 40 you must also have been diagnosed with four of the following five criteria:
· Hypertension
· Sleep Apnoea
· Type 2 Diabetes
· Cardiovascular Disease
· Hypercholesterolemia
If you do not have a BMI of over 40 and at least four of the above conditions your GP will not be able to prescribe Mounjaro for weight loss. This is based on the guidance currently available.
Roll out in GP practices is based on a staged approach and is determined by local integrated care boards (ICBs). As per Birmingham & Solihull ICB, Mounjaro will not be immediately available and will not be accessible to everyone who wishes to use it. Initially, Mounjaro will only be available on the NHS to those expected to benefit the most. People who are eligible for Mounjaro through primary care services should only expect to start to get access by mid 2025. The exact date remains unknown.

Access to general practice is difficult and resources are limited, therefore we would request you avoid making unnecessary appointments if you do not qualify for Mounjaro injections, doing so would block access to patients you are currently in need of clinical support.
